Celebrities have allergies too...
I don't know about anyone else, but I've noticed over the years that the number of people I know suffering from allergies has grown over the years. According to Allergy UK there are over 150 million allergy sufferers all over Europe and this figure continues to grow year on year. With the number of sufferers growing each year, I was interested to discover how many celebrities are genuinely affected by the condition and I was really surprised to discover the following celebrities suffer from a serious allergy condition:-
Halle Berry - Shellfish allergy
The Oscar winning actress has a shellfish allergy. I'm not sure how severe her allergy is, but some, they only have to smell fish cooking and they start to react. According to Allergy UK, Allergy to fish affects about 1 in 200 people, Surveys indicate that after nuts, seafood is the next most common food causing severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
Reactions to look out for;
After digesting fish the following may occur; nausea, sickness, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, wheezing, rhinitis, flushing, urticarial rashes and dramatic swelling.
Kelis peanut allergy.
I don't know why, but this one really shocked me. More then likely Kelis will be one of the millions of sufferers infuriated with the packaging messaging "This product may contain nuts." She will also have to be extra careful when eating out to ensure there is no cross contamination and carry a Adrenaline injection in case of any severe allergy reactions. Recent studies show that the rate of peanut allergy has doubled over a 5 year period both here in Europe and in the United States.
Reactions to look out for;
Rash, eczema and vomiting. However, some allergic reactions to peanut or tree nuts can be severe, causing difficulty in breathing ( anaphylaxis).
Kelly Hoppen - Gluten free
Allergy UK describe the Coeliac disease as a, lifelong intolerance to gliaden, part of the gluten proteins that are founds in the grain of wheat, rye and barley. Gluten gives elasticity to baked goods and the ‘chewy' texture of many breads and products. "gluten free ranges" there are a wide variety of alternative food for allergy sufferers.
Allergy UK list the following reactions to look out for;
- stomach pain, abdominal cramps, nausea and bloating
- altered bowel habit: often diarrhoea but sometimes constipation
- low energy and tiredness
- mouth ulcers
- a severe type of skin rash, called dermatitis
- poor weight gain in children; weight loss in some adults
- joint and bone pain, with or without osteoporosis
- infertility and repeated miscarriages
Zooey Deschanel sufferers from multiple allergies
"New Girl" actress, Zooey Deschanel reportedly suffers from; egg, dairy, peanut and wheat allergy. Zooey joins millions of people all over the world suffering from multiple allergies at the same time. Like Zooey, my son also has multiple allergies which makes , eating out and shopping that little bit more challenging. Carrying a auto injector is essential when going out to eat, because any situation could potentially be life threatening.

I'm not sure how vocal any of the ladies I've talked about today are about allergies. Or, whether they support any allergy related charities, but I think the more we get the message in the media , about the fact this is a life threatening condition affecting a high amount of people all over the world, including celebrities, this can help to educate members of the public too.
