4 memorable moments in the world of allergies - 2015

4 memorable moments for UK allergy sufferers during 2015

Happy New Year We can eaters!

Whether it was discovering a new free from product or seeing significant changes in the free from industry, nobody can deny that there have been some significant things happening in the free from industry that have either helped to; raise awareness of allergies or reinforce the ignorance allergy sufferers continue to face on a daily basis.

Here is a round up of what we consider to be the most memorable moments of 2015:

1. Allergy Free From North Show

During November 1000's of people descended onto the Allergy Free from Show North  to explore new ways managing their everyday challenges. We exhibited at the event and met some pretty amazing people who either just discovered they have allergies or people wanting to discover new products. I've been attending this ground breaking event to discover new products for my son, so it was an honor to be able to help and advise others.

2. That Letter from 100 Chefs

100 chefs openly criticised the EU Food rules on allergy Information during March 2015 stating the regulation as a "Bureaucratic nightmare. " Well it was the response on social media and from other chefs such as Steve Walpole that put those 100 chefs back in their place!

3.Tesco's Gluten free Christmas TV advert

Now I'm not 100% sure butIi believe this could be the first advert from one of big supermarkets who have dedicated an entire advert to their free from product range. This  this is a big deal for me, because if I rewind 7 years ago ,when discovering my son had multiple life threatening allergies. The free from options that were available in  supermarkets were extremely limited. So when fast forward to 2016,  and now Tesco's have 350 free from products in their range and advertising them on TV, I can't wait to see more of this from the other big supermarkets!

4. The Gluten free food prescription debate

During August 2015, the government were accused of fuelling the obesity crisis by funding gluten free food that was high in fat. A leading medic, DR Gayyaz Chaudhri called for prescriptions for gluten-free foods to be banned. He went onto to say that  "It should be stopped. It’s irresponsible and it’s leading to an obesity epidemic. Leading to coeliacs being villainized in the press for a lifelong autoimmune condition that can only be controlled by eating gluten free food.

Several months later Commissioning Groups around the country announced proposals to cut gluten free food prescriptions. These Groups included:
  • Chiltern Commissioning Group
  • Enfield Commissioning Group
  • West and South Norfolk Commissioning Group
  • Nottingham North East Commissioning Group
  • Blackpool Commissioning Group.
Many people were unhappy about this (including us) and the power of the people made sure their voices were heard on social media.
